New York, NY - Forum Gallery presents a two-person exhibition of new and bold figurative works by Alyssa Monks (b. 1977) and Clio Newton (b. 1989), opening Thursday, January 18, 2024. The two women are among today’s most influential, internationally-recognized artists. While each has a unique approach to her art, both artists employ formidable technique to portray a thoroughly contemporary sensibility.
Diving deeply and unapologetically into charged, impassioned moments revelatory of their female subjects, Monks’ oil paintings and Newton’s works in charcoal, colored pencil or oil are vivid expressions arising from the unique personal perspective of each artist, described in her own distinct visual language.
Viewed together, the eleven works in the exhibition are complementary and widely different visual experiences, commanding our attention while illuminating the accomplishments of two visionary leaders of contemporary figuration.
The exhibition opens with a reception for the artists on Thursday, January 18, 2024 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, and will be on view through Saturday, March 2, 2024.

Rachel Bensimon, originally from Toronto and now residing in New York, embarks on an artistic journey that delicately intertwines the innocence and profound intensity of childhood. Holding an MFA from The New York Academy of Art, her work delves into the psychology of capturing the essence of childhood innocence and inadvertent subversity.
Infusing her fascination with dolls, objects of a child's idealization and adoration, into her figures, Rachel's portraits skillfully blur the lines between reality and fantasy. In her recent series, she portrays girls and young women within imaginative contexts, often adorned with animals, flowers, bubbles, and lollipops against patterned backgrounds.

Thursday, November 9, 2023
Athens Art Gallery is pleased to present the solo exhibition of the American artist Darryl Keith Babatunde Smith titled: Whispered Lines. A polyglot, and knowledgeable of the ancient and contemporary Greek language, inspired by the ancient sculpture, as well as by his own image, the artist is going to present a series of 15 works on paper.
The curator Elizabeth Plessa writes: “The painting of Darryl Keith Babatunde Smith or ΔΚΒΣ, in the Greek version of his name and personality, seems to be defined by the many aspects of time. Smith studies languages in order to traverse the time between his own time and the texts of the art he loves. The multilingual titles of his works refer not only to various chapters of mythology and culture, but also to a peculiar bridging between ancient languages and his own, contemporary English. Even the material that he mostly uses has passed through centuries from the Northern Renaissance until today. Like the pages from the time of a journal, each of his works is, to him, the encoded memory of a personal moment which has been immersed in ancient Greek sculpture and the myths that birthed it. Between that past and the present, the body stands silent, his own body, depicted in ancient positions that approach painting through the ways of sculpture."

Growing up on the island of Jamaica, Massachusetts painter Andrae Green says that the Caribbean Sea never played a huge part in his conscious life, but he was always aware of its presence. He knew, unconsciously, that he could go to it whenever he wanted and that it would always be there for him. He remembers his father bringing his family to Kingston Harbor and watching the young boys jump off the docks, into the abyss. Their fearless trust in the sea always fascinated him. Their leaps of faith inspired him.
Since moving to western Massachusetts and no longer having easy access to the sea, Green feels a longing that has translated into his most recent body of work: paintings that speak to the limitless potential for human imagination and freedom (a perspective that is very needed in these times) and drawings about weightlessness and freedom, all inspired by bodies of water and the Caribbean landscape. Green says that in the Caribbean mind, the sea, “Brings both joy and fear, love and hate, hope and resentment.”

Anna Zorina presents “Cast Shadows,” James Razko’s debute solo exhibition featuring his latest series of paintings, “Monomyth,” and recent work from his acclaimed “Tiles” series. In “Cast Shadows,” Razko masterfully employs what he calls “hyper-illusion,” challenging viewers to distinguish between reality and imagination. “Monomyth” initially resembles collages but then transforms into intricate mythologically-pregnant manipulations of compressed space. “Meanwhile, in ‘Tiles,’ Razko merges Western Trompe L’oeil and Islamic mosaic traditions, revealing complex narratives beneath the lifelike surface, marked by the passage of time and conflict.” Razko’s work across both series underscores the pivotal role of illusion in transcending personal and cultural boundaries while exploring universal themes of humanity.

Roots and Vessels delves into the intricate tapestry of human existence, exploring the profound themes of ancestry, the body, lineage, and family portraits. This exhibition features works by nationally acclaimed artists Andrae Green, Billie Lee, Daisy Patton, Lisa Iglesias, and Mark Guglielmo. The diverse works of these contemporary artists invite you to explore the multifaceted connections that bind us to our past, present, and future. The artists in this exhibition employ a range of mediums to convey the essence of lineage, reminding us that our roots are not just a place but a profound part of who we are. The artists included in this exhibition are connected through process by mining family archives and found footage, recalling memories of home and imagined landscapes, and even collaborating with family members. In many of these works, the body serves as a vessel for these stories. These artists illuminate the complexities of how we can carry the imprints of generations, embodying both the history and future of our families. This exhibition is curated by Professor and Gallery Director Priya N. Green. The artist panel will be moderated by CCSU Curatorship students Wayka Galarza-Rodriguez and Emilie López.

Salon 21 is pleased to present Incorporeum, a solo exhibition by Lucía Rodríguez Pérez, opening to the public on Thursday, October 5, 2023. Rodríguez Pérez’s work explores the allure of color and the uncertain nature of space. Through her use of shapes and shades, she creates a connection between representation and abstraction, defying realism. The exhibition showcases a series of nine paintings that transport the viewer to a dream-like world. The carefully chosen color palettes create patterns and shapes that fill the canvas, encouraging one to explore the work both as a representation and a surface. By embracing ambiguity as a conceptual space beyond language, Rodríguez Pérez challenges the audience to piece together one’s own interpretation of this reality. The work encourages the viewer to comprehend lived experiences from a new perspective, where illusion and abstraction converge.

Opening: Thursday, Sept 14, 2023, 7-11pm
Greenpoint Gallery is pleased to present ETHER CREATURE, a solo exhibition of paintings and drawings by Brooklyn-based artist Charlotte Segall. Curator Shawn James explains, “Segall’s works exist between two realms. There is the realm we know, the tangible and familiar, and then there is something else that beckons us in. We don’t quite know what this other world holds, but we sense it moving, and we are sensitized to something inter-dimensional.”
Segall explains that she is “always trying to create a sense of dramatic event. The event itself is usually not clear, but it’s clear that the people and animals involved are invested. They are eager or entranced, curious, intentional, forceful, pleasured, exhausted, in danger, transcendent, transforming, noble, abject, and usually trying or have tried their absolute best. Each character is packed with its own hero’s journey. In this way, I offer up a life philosophy about what it feels like to pursue meaning and resonance. The ability to create impact is one definition of power— and empowerment is always being negotiated, both inside and out.”

You are invited on an odyssey through time and imagination, to discover the myths that form our collective unconscious. Uncanny symmetries emerge from the shadows of memory, illuminating timeless mysteries of our human nature. You may experience a dizzying sense of deja vu. Do not fear! Truth and beauty will be your guiding stars on this journey.
Born of the union between artist couple Richard T Scott and Jordan Baker, “Modern Mythos” summons the muses of the old masters to explore the liminal space between the orient and the occident, the coupling of stoic and Buddhist philosophy. Baker’s baroque still lives writhe with the haunting of Japanese nature spirits, blending the Dutch tradition of vanitas with Shinto meditations on the cycles of death and rebirth. Her alchemical compositions alloy the motif’s of Georgia O’Keefe and Rachel Ruysch, creating a startlingly contemporary atmosphere. Scott’s figurative paintings follow Charon’s ferry to the gates of Hades, convene with Medusa among the ruins of civilization, traverse the fall of the Roman Republic and foretell the future of our own Autumnal Empire.
Join us for a mythic evening November 8th from 6-9 PM at Stone Sparrow Gallery in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village. Mythic attire encouraged, but not mandatory. Your hosts will be in costume.

Rachel Sard: Insofar is a celebration of texture, luminosity, and transparency through painting. Rachel is fascinated by the slight imperfections and subtle tonal shifts in often overlooked objects. The subjects of Rachel’s work – a pile of stones, discarded onion peels, a mass of oyster shells – become vessels through which she can explore the optical qualities of paint, taking the slightest nuances of light to the furthest possible visible moment. In Insofar – her first museum exhibition - Rachel exposes the peculiar attributes of familiar subjects, such as the plum shades of a smooth pebble or the pocked surface of a rippled clam shell.
Rachel’s works are exhaustively detailed studies that feature densely packed subject matter bursting toward the edge of the canvas, pushing realism precariously close to abstraction. Her paintings encourage viewers to look closely and deliberately, revealing the artist’s subtle but purposeful brushstrokes. Rachel’s creative process is an exercise in stamina and precision, as she can take months to complete one painting, revisiting each canvas over time to make meticulous changes to her compositions.
Many of the works in Insofar were inspired by objects Rachel selected from the Stamford Museum’s natural history collection.... (Continued).

Through my oil paintings, I transform frustration into impactful expressions. The backdrop of my work captures the unsettling realities that confront us daily. Amidst the annoyance and disillusionment, I also seek inspirational stories worth preserving and enlightening future generations. Engaging viewers with interactive elements, I depict portraits and hands and feet doing mundane routines intertwined with the collages. At first glance, the figures may seem isolated, but upon closer inspection, the articles reveal themselves, urging viewers to delve deeper and confront uncomfortable truths. I intend to go beyond mere aesthetic appeal and create a lasting impact. With this unique approach, I aim to make a lasting difference and ignite a spark within each viewer, encouraging them to question, reflect, raise awareness, and, ideally, become involved in societal change.

Fish Outta Water is a solo exhibition by the artist Johanna Aenderl, showcasing her large-scale trace monotype drawings and animated shorts. Full of texture and spontaneous mark-making, the work is representational. Through observed drawings and found objects, this series is rooted in places intimately known to the artist (Brooklyn and Midwestern wetlands). Aenderl’s work attends to the nonhuman world in these places by noticing the details, changes, and relationships. By merging observational drawing with metaphor, these composites highlight the impact and reliance humanity has on the natural world.

Growing up amidst the beauty of the outdoors, Eric Price found solace and uncertainty in equal measure. From hiking to swimming, sailing to fishing, he was drawn to the water's edge. This connection with nature allowed him to come to terms with this queer identity, and these experiences have informed his art in powerful ways.
In "The Beach Only Few Can See" Price explores the intersection of humanity and nature, focusing particularly on the male figure. The works on display range from intimate portraits of angels caught in private moments, to depictions of men finding solitude and camaraderie in the warmth of the water.

Each has been asked to articulate in a short written statement, words that convey their personal approach to composition:
"A critical formal component in all works of art, 'composition' directs the many choices an artist makes when constructing the visual elements of picture making. Composition can be personal, a learned strategy, and/or an intuitive guide that artists use to make decisions when assembling and constructing the visual components of a picture. There are formal issues and countless choices an artist is confronted with that may be underlined with theory and intuition regarding the design of a composition." - Thomas Germano

In all essentials, we are the same as our ancestors, plagued by the same problems and inhabiting the same failing bodies. I lay our desires and vulnerabilities bare.”

The New York Society of Women Artists (NYSWA) was founded in 1925 and devoted itself to avant-garde women artists. The organization initially had 23 painters and sculptors, all recognized as professionals. Four of the original members participated in the Armory Show, some were members of the Whitney Studio Club and the Society of Independent Artists. NYSWA’s venerated founding members earned Guggenheim Fellowships, Prix de Rome, and engagement with the Federal Arts Project during the New Deal. As a Society, women artists had more support and exhibition opportunities.
Today, NYSWA persists in strength as it nears its centennial and reflects the voices of its inter-generational, multi-ethnic members. The organization has nearly tripled in size and limits itself by charter to 60 active members — who continue to garner acclaim as they prevail with fortitude, making art in solidarity. Celebrating Women’s History Month, NYSWA is pleased to exhibit at the Queens College Art Center to present a wide range of art by female artists of New York.

Murphy creates figure dressed in the most formal black and white gowns. Introducing the idea of monochrome, the use of black and white dresses adds an element of formality and timelessness to the pieces, while the carefree and exuberant figures challenge societal expectations of how women should conduct themselves. The dresses serve as a visual representation of the contrast between the expectations placed upon women and the reality of their experiences. The figures themselves represent the triumph of the feminine spirit, embracing their freedom and taking control of their own narratives. In exploring solitude, each solo figure shows strength and confidence as she moves within her space, embodying the idea of a visual Sonata. Murphy is depicting the power of femininity, the beauty of self-assuredness, and the freedom that can be found in moments of celebration

In Alvaro’s work, reality is captured in a very allegoric and unapologetic way. He’s influenced by his environment and surroundings; from the swagger of the Harlem streets to introspection and intimacy.
He’s conscious about the human structure and anatomy, but at the end he allows the medium to take control and deliver pleasant results through loose strokes and splashes. He puts his soul in every single drip and brush stroke administered. No precision and planning is necessary.
Each figure comes out of the page as if arriving from a climatic, yet surreal dream. Each figure is constantly moving and attached to a provocative narrative.

In Imaginary Homelands, Alicia Brown celebrates the perseverance of migrants who have left their home countries either voluntarily or by force. Brown uses portraiture to tell the stories of friends and family from Jamaica residing in the United States. She combines elements from Jamaican culture including native plants, animals, objects, symbols, and idioms with elements from Western art and history. In doing so, Brown examines the duality of who a subject was in their homeland and who they become in order to adapt and survive in a foreign culture. Objects such as Elizabethan ruff collars evoke narratives of power, control, and social status, while native Caribbean plants create an environment of home. In these powerful portraits, Brown celebrates the ingenuity with which immigrants both adapt to and shape their adopted homes.

The paintings in Theme Song are fictional and poetic versions of Zachary Sitrin’s personal history. Grounded in figuration, his paintings approach aesthetic values of expressionism and abstraction, bolstered by the artist’s observational experience, echoing memories and unfolding fantasies. They live on the edge of abstraction, hovering somewhere between reality and fantasy, between coherence and incoherence, filled with figures imbued with uncertainty and inseparability that mirror their surroundings. Realized through various paths of discovery and evolving over time, Sitrin’s paintings rely on risk taking. His works remain open to interpretation, resisting the temptation to become fully identifiable and homogenized and rather existing as venues for intuition and improvisation both for the artist and the viewer.

Remember the “Chicago and Vicinity” shows the Art Institute used to put up every year? Just like their annual “American Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture” they were discontinued in the 1980’s. As art critic Robert Hughes then noted, that was the decade when the judgments of art critics and connoisseurs were replaced by the monetary value assigned by a booming art market. Money talked - bullshit walked.
As quantifiable and objective as market value may be, however, it marginalizes many kinds of art which continue to be practiced, taught, and collected. Museums have ignored contemporary religious or sacred art for at least a hundred years. Since mid-century, they have also been ignoring just about every other kind of celebratory expression - unless it celebrates a preferred gender or racial identity. And whether it’s an architectural showpiece or a dingy alley, cityscapes do indeed celebrate something quite important to humanity: urban life.
What I’ve found remarkable was just how varied that celebration could be. I was not seeking variety - it just ended up that way - in location as well as elements of style. Yet what all of them share is a feeling of love rather than anger, grievance, alienation, or despair. The city is their home.
Passionate cityscapes have appeared throughout European art history —- remember El Greco’s View of Toledo that came to Chicago last year ? But what does love have to do with contemporary art theory? It does not distinguish love from sentimentality while it prioritizes semiotic cleverness over what is felt in the heart.
This show might not have happened without the Palette and Chisel Academy which graciously offered their gallery space free of charge and then mounted their own exhibit on the same theme. Hopefully this will be the first of several exhibitions of celebratory expression by local artists. Portrait, landscape, still-life, and figure are yet to come.
For over 125 years the Palette and Chisel Academy has played the long game of Western Civilization rather the short game of artworld fashion. Their 50th Anniversary Exhibition was held in the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1945. Seventy-seven years later, 1012 N. Dearborn is hosting a show similar to the vicinity exhibitions that used to appear at 111 S. Michigan. And so the artworld of Chicago had come full circle.

“Summer’s End” imagines a metaphorical change of season. It is an oblique, atmospheric meditation on political and social divides. The landscape emerges as an emotional place rather than a literal one. The county fair at summer’s end is a place of reckoning, full of innocence, and innocence lost.

A Different World is a collection of mostly figurative large-scale charcoal and mixed media drawings, celebrating the multitude of ways Blackness takes up and creates space in the world. These works are heavily influenced by afrofuturist tropes such as space, geometry, celestial bodies and personal cosmologies. Traditionally my work has focused on US politics, and the juxtaposition of contemporary and historical social issues in this country with aspirational undertones. Now, the trauma of current mainstream political happenings such as the 2020 election and the January 6 insurrection, fosters a creatively debilitating environment, leeching the joy from my creative process. The pieces in this collection intentionally pivot away from this, reclaiming joy and centering the personal politic using themes of love, beauty, family, identity and mobility. -Tylonn J. Sawyer

Lauren Amalia Redding (MFA 2011) isn’t just fascinated with the monumental, mysterious exploration undertaken by astronauts, but also by how philosophy and culture—which propel technology and the humanities in equal measure—launch each starsailor into their new frontiers. Redding draws primarily with silverpoint, which is metallic, and with mixed media on DuraLar, a plastic film used to insulate spacesuits, both reflecting the materials of space exploration. References range from ancient mythology and sculpture to Renaissance figures to enigmatic portraits, all of whom interact with astronauts and space shuttles. Her solo exhibition, Interstellar Ascendants, fine-tunes the feedback loop between what we perceive as anachronistic, what we praise as progress, and, ultimately, what principles we know to be timeless.

This show is an ode to the smallest moments in my town of Corpus Christi, TX. The scenes are often captured at twilight or evening. The loss of light and visibility lend a haunting quality to the pieces that creates a tension within the space. As if capturing a moment of stillness just before an action.

Persephone / Persephone features the multi-panel collaborative painting by Elody Gyekis and Joanne Landis. This large installation is inspired by the narrative arc of the Greek goddess Persephone’s story.
Gyekis and Landis layer paint on each other’s work and alternate the roles of both artist and Persephone. They explore the themes of birth and death, love and renewal, separation and reuniting, mother and daughter, and the seasons of the year. The artists both celebrate the power of women and explore diverse feminine mythologies and archetypes in their individual work. Together they build on these themes with mutual trust and respect, their collaborative process revealing the alchemical magic of collaboration.

For her fourth solo exhibition with the gallery, Jenny Brillhart presents painted set-ups that she arranges and re-arranges in her studio. These paintings relay with haunting harmony and similitude the light and quality of her practice space. Brillhart comes to her routines with a set of principles: no object is more important than another; the building, its light and space are as much materials as any other, including the paint. The objects are often ready and within reach.

Hurd's paintings are imaginary environments, encouraging the viewers mentally to put the missing or disjointed pieces in place and imagine for themselves what the future will be. Her paintings investigate the idea that transformation and change are inherently bound together with stillness and waiting; where some of her figures and settings transform, others lay at rest.
